Appreciating diversity and inclusion is about more than issues concerning race and culture. Rather, appreciating diversity and inclusion involves our conceptual  and perceptual responses to  phenomena like age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, race, ability, capacity, thinking styles, beliefs, intelligence, personality, ideology, geographical location, culture, language and expression,  to name only a few. Discrimination is a complex concept because it is socially constructed. As such, discrimination is influenced by belief systems and community institutions like culture, family, schools etc. For this reason, any negative emphasis on difference from the status quo may stimulate an aversion to inclusion. 

In any organisation, the leadership has the power to construct and maintain the culture whether negative or positive. Consequently, diversity and inclusion interventions are critical at a strategic level.
